Blog 11: More Analysis on two Sleeve Patents

Patent: INSULATOR SLEEVE FOR A BEVERAGE  CONTAINER
US 7,922,031 B1
Priority Date: March 1, 2006
Purpose: To provide a sleeve that is reusable and washable.
Technology: The sleeve’s goal is to reduce waste, while maintaining the ability to write on the sleeve. This sleeve has an inner and outer layer, where the outer layer can be textured for better grip, and transparent so as to show a marking on the inner sleeve. The outer surface of the sleeve acts as a gripping surface that makes it easier for the consumer to grip. It is designed for repeated use, which essentially negates the use for prior sleeves.
Anticipation and Obviousness: This is not very novel and valid. It just allows for customization of the sleeve and makes it reusable. This is important, as it will be more eco-friendly; the actual design is quite obvious. Fundamentally this invention allows for you to write into a sleeve and then see through that sleeve. Thus, it allows for speedier delivery and production of drinks in coffee shops. The claims are not fully explained or detailed in any prior art, but this is a novel patent.

Patent: Hot and Cold Cup Sleeve·
US 20140151385 A1
Priority Date: February 6, 2014
Purpose: To be used on both hot and cold beverages.
Technology: By having three distinct layers: an inner water absorbent layer, an outer synthetic fabric layer, and an unseen adhesive polyethylene layer, this sleeve is able to work for both hot and cold drinks. It protects the user from burning and also acts as an absorbent to deal with condensation. This sleeve avowals many key elements: low price, lightweight, disposable, and thin.
Anticipation and Obviousness: This has new technologies and designs that can make the sleeve universal working for both hot and cold drinks. Definitely novel and non-obvious. Claim 1 discusses the use of a three layer design: a water absorbent inner layer, an outer layer that keeps hands dry, and a polyethylene film that is not visible. After looking at prior art, this patent application displays that it is novel and non-obvious. I think this was definitely anticipated since everyone probably wanted a cup sleeve that cold we used for both hot and cold drinks.

  2. Vruti! Very good picks. However, for your analysis of insulator sleeves, I kind of disagree. It might not seem novel for us, but back then, it might have been fairly novel.

    1. Hi Eric,

      I really like how you were not afraid to address your disagreement for her analysis of the insulator sleeves, and gave a good reason why you think that way. At first I agreed with her too until I saw your comment which makes more sense to me now. Great Job! I would suggest giving her some positive feedback so she knows what to continue doing further on.

  4. Hi Vruti! I think your point of view is very interesting, and different from mine. I think it's hard to say back then if it was novel or not, but it seems like it had to have been for it to have become so widespread.;
