Blog 37: Benefits of the Class

As someone extremely interested in the startup environment, learning about Patents is extremely important. I felt that this class gave me a great basic learning of what Patents are and how to write them. Before I took the class, I had no idea what a patent was and how it was even different from copyrights and other types of intellectual property. The type of material I learned in this class will help me with my entire career. Even if I don’t end up applying for a patent, I now know all the essential steps and methods needed to successfully file my patent application. This is a skill many people do not have and I was fortunate to learn this semester.

I definitely recommend this class to anyone interested who wants to start their own start-up! There is so much you learn from what a patent is, how to file any application, what needs to be in your patent application, to patent litigation, infringement, court cases, and so much more! It is definitely a worthwhile class to take!

Also, Professor Lavian is a great lecturer and he has so much passion for the topic. He is also extremely experienced and has a lot of knowledge to share about the topic! I am so glad I took the class with him. I not only learned a lot, but really enjoyed the topic and had fun each week.

Thanks for a great semester, Professor Lavian!!!

  1. Hey Vruti,

Thank you for the great post! Personally, I also had zero knowledge about patents before taking this class. But, after taking this class, I learned a lot about patents and realized that filing a patent is easier than I thought it would be. I really like how you mention Dr. Lavian's passion and effort he put in to this class! Great work Vruti!

  2. Hi Vruti,

Great post in explaining how you will apply what you learned in the future. I like how transparent you were about your future professional goals and how you related that to the class.

I definitely had no knowledge of patents previously and I think class is really useful for future entrepreneurs like you (and me!) Do you think there is anything else you wish you could have learned from the class?

  3. Hi Vruti,

I'm glad you came into the class excited about startups - I am too! I actually worked on a startup for the past year before enrolling in this class. I also felt that this class gave me a great basic learning of what Patents are and how to write them (although I doubt my abilities to write one... hopefully I won't have to anytime soon.)

Before the class, I think I was in a similar place as you - I wouldn't have been able to tell you the difference between IP and copy write laws, or what could be patented.

I'm glad you enjoyed the topic and had fun each weeK!

  5. Hi Vruti, Great job with this post as well. Fantastic work all semester. I really enjoyed reading through all you blog posts every week, especially since you create blog posts on topics beyond what was just covered in class. I am glad you were able to learn so much from this. I feel confident now walking away that I will be able to discuss patents in depth in the future.

  7. Vruti,

Great post! I agree that this was a great semester with Tal as an excellent lecturer. I also like how you identified the different between a Patent, trademark, copyright, and trade secret as I also had no idea what the distinction was before this semester began.

  8. Vruti! I can't believe this is your last post! ):
I definitely relate to you in that I am very interested in the startup environment, and I think patents are very important in protecting our inventions. Similarly, I didn't know what patents are nor did I know what a complicated process it is to apply for one. Like you, I really enjoyed this class, and I would definitely encourage everyone to take this class!

I see you are encouraging people to join start ups, what are some of your ideas?
